Hello and welcome to the Sage Speaks: Astrology Observations (ed III).
With me your host, as always, Cosmic Sage.
I’ve start opening up my services to do some free Big Three Readings over on Tumblr, and I’ve also wanted to extend my services to doing full natal chart readings personalized to you as well. So I will be including that in my Ko-Fi storefront here soon as well.
With all of these different readings though it got me to thinking about the big three- and why they are so important.
What is a big three reading?
Your big three consist of sun, moon, and rising. To get your rising sign you need to know the place you were born and the time you were born as well. It’s the only way to be able to receive it as the rising sign changes every few hours.
To do a reading off of these three is to look at the sun, moon, rising independently work out strengths and weaknesses, aspects between them, and then how they come together to form a coherent make-up.
Now here’s the kicker- these are pretty much the only signs of significant importance.
Don’t get me wrong. All the other placements have their own merit and why they’re important, but at the end of the day these are the three that help to dictate the rest.
This is what you are actively using day in and day out, these are the signs that make up the basis of everything else.
Let’s break it down real quick:
The Sun
The sun is the basic personality of the person. It’s what drives the whole system. If a person was a car on the highway of life, the sun sign is who’s behind the wheel. They, whether or not there’s any aspects, are in constant action with everything else going on in the car. They decide where you’re going, who else gets in the car, what the speed is, what’s playing on the radio.
The Moon
The moon is the basic emotions of the person. It’s how they process and comprehend what’s going on around them. Likewise, if they are in the car they are in the passenger seat, telling everyone else in the car why they’re stopping at such a place, calming down any conflicts, and trying to make the sun as happy as possible (aspecting or not).
Rising (Ascendant)
Finally the rising, this is the paint job of the car. It’s what everyone else sees on the highway. Even with the sun making the active decisions to avoid a pothole or taking a turn off- people are going to be viewing the car as the one doing that. It’s how you’re perceived by others, and how you handle conflict, you’re not going to go on an icy slope in bald tires- so you may plan ahead for that, it’s all dependent on the rising.
“So what about the other signs, if these three are the most important?”- you probably
Well let’s take a look. If you have the siblings Venus and Mars in the back seat- two very emotionally charged opposites- yelling and screaming about what they want to do or how they feel about something-
It’s up to the Sun (driver) on if they’re going to take those turns or not, and the moon would help them process said emotions.
Mercury is the radio, the horn, the blinkers, the gas and brakes. It’s how the Sun perceives the world around them, and then in turn communicates back. I’m turning this way, or I want you to stop doing that. Ultimately the Sun controls all of these aspects, Mercury is just the voice behind it.
Jupiter and Saturn aren’t passenger’s they’re more like this:
Jupiter is the road, it’s what takes you places, that’s where your driving along. There can be good roads, bad roads, roads that take you somewhere fun. You learn, and grow as a person the longer you drive on the road. You figure out who you are as a vehicle. Where you’re off to next.
Saturn is the rules and regulations of the road, the laws you have to follow. It’s the speed limit, and you may be apt as a driver to get pulled over if you don’t follow the rules right. As a new driver sometimes that’s hard to understand and you’ll get pulled over more, but as time goes on- it becomes second nature.
Ok, but what about the last three- Saturn, Uranus, and Pluto?
These are generational planets- and don’t have as much as an impact on the drivers decisions personally- but might make you more aware of what else is going on-
Uranus is like bringing your radical uncle along. Their the ones telling you that if other drivers are going slow- speed it up, If other people are painting their cars yellow, paint yours purple. Regaling you with different stories as you drive, and opening your mind to new information.
Neptune is like your flowy aunt, who may have had too much fun in the sixties. She’ll tell you you need new car ornaments, or how to spruce up your hubcaps with daisies instead. She enjoys talking about the deeper philosophical things in life, and may spark ideas if she sees something interesting while on the drive from another vehicle.
Pluto is the dark teenager- asking questions like – “what if were were to drive off the side of the road right now?”, “was that roadkill?”, “What would happen if another car hit us?”. They don’t talk much, but when they do it’s about something that usually the driver doesn’t think too much about.
None of these three talk much with the driver- and often times, vehicles made around the same time as yours have the same three in the backseat asking the same questions-
The questions sting a little more or resonate between Sun, Moon, Rising, Mars, and Venus if there’s aspects. If there isn’t any aspect it’s something that may go overlooked- or not questioned as deeply.
But the important thing is- at the end of the day- it’s still the sun driving this parade

At the end of the day- it all wraps back to the Sun-
If the Sun wants to listen to the questions and the needs of the other passengers, how well it wants to pay attention to the rules of the road, or if it notices the road seems to be nicer in a certain path- its up to the Sun to determine that path.
In all my years learning about this subject I haven’t been able to find a good term to encompass what I’m talking about.
There’s aspecting sure– major and minor and everything is aspecting off one another all the time, but…
It doesn’t feel right to get the full magnitude for what I’m talking about. Because if you have the sun and moon both responding to Venus in a certain way, and the Mars throws in their two cents, with the generational planets in the back adding in- it’s just too much to be considered by the traditional aspect system.
I don’t know about you, but I often think back to my car trips as a kid. How the conversations could be coming from a million different places, and while I have my own individual relationships with each of my family members that influenced how we were all talking to one another-
In the end it could only be described as a familial dynamic because we all knew how to talk on the same wavelength to ensure we were all being understood, even if it took a few tries to get across properly.
This is what I imagine this vehicle is like for the planets.
So for the time being- unless someone can tell me what I am actually talking about I’m going to call this planetary synastry.
Planetary Synastry: The act of all the planets embedding their unique personalities to form a coherent narrative.
I think that sounds about right.
Back to the big three…
There is a reason that the Sun is associated with the father, and the moon is associated with the mother. They are the key driving principles behind what helps to make your vehicle unique, the rising is just how they’re dressing up.
I recommend get intimately familiar with all three, and taking a close look at the major aspects between them
After all these are the three that people are interacting with on a day to day. So the more intimately acquainted you become the easier time one has when trying to navigate through life.
If you don’t know where your passions lay, take a look at your sun and see how it’s interacting off of your moon. Is there a disconnect between how your feeling about your passions? Are you hoping for something more than where your passions lie? Wanting to take a larger road than that you’ve offered yourself?
If people are constantly saying you are so different than how they thought, take a look at your sun and rising sign- is there something holding you back from being your true self? Are you showing to the world the passions you want to pursue? Are you giving the energy of who you want to be?
You aren’t feeling comfortable with your actions? Even if it’s what you want to do? Look at the moon and rising. There could be a disconnect between your personal desire to be relaxed and at ease. It’s that, versus the persona you put out to the world.
The bottom line of it all- everything else can wait, these three can’t
Please read up on the rest of your personal planets, and your generational planets. It can offer a lot of insight to how you react. I would just put them on the back burner until you know these three.
These three are what are most important to consider when looking at previous and future actions.

So Where Are We Leaving Off?
All roads lead to Rome-
That being the Sun, Moon, and Rising.
At the end of the day they are the most in control.
The rest of the planets can do and think whatever they want, but at the end of the day- the Sun and Moon process it. The Rising is just the way its perceived.
So while you may want to know how you love, and care about your partner- the Moon’s relationship to those emotions is what will support Venus. The Sun will decide how you are going to pursue those desires.
You may want to know how you handle challenges. The way you get upset, and angry. You may want to know what drives that spark. The Moon is behind the emotional backlashes of Mars. The Sun is what drives the action of Mars and whether it heeds the whims of it or not.
You just need to take that time to fully understand how your inner drive wants to process these other communications, and the Moon is going to handle the emotional aspect of it.
The Rising, well, that’s all appearances. If you’re honking your horn for no reason, but you’re driving a Volkswagen Bug (#notsponsored) people are less likely to see that as a bad thing. That or you’re trying to call out for danger. Meanwhile if your in a large truck- it might be seen as more aggressive.
There’s always a lot to consider, and a lot goes into learning how the planets, aspects, and houses. They impact your day to day. But this is always the place to start.
Anyways- have a great Tuesday, and breathe deep.

Stay groovy, and I’ll catch you on the flip,
