A Walk Through the Houses – Third House

Welcome to a Walk Through the Houses – Third House.

Welcome to the next section where we are going to be covering the third house in astrology. If you are new to this, we are going to be covering all twelve houses. I have already completed the first and second houses. I have both linked below for your reading enjoyment.

An Important thing to remember when reading is that all the planets need to be associated with the sign of the house as well. The planet will read stronger through the play of the sign that it’s in. For example if you have Mars in your third house, and Pisces is the sign for the house, take a look at both combined to get the best idea for how that is pursued.

Third House

Breaking it down, the Third house rules communication and overall thought process. This is how a person interacts with the world right outside their door. With their neighbors, their siblings, their family members. It goes into the deeper thought process, and how they think and view the world personally. It also deals in school, and how you learn through the process of education. I don’t think it would come as a surprise to anyone that the Third House is ruled by Gemini and Mercury. Both dealing in the communication aspects of life. While Gemini focuses more on the social aspect of Mercury. Unlike their sister sign, Virgo, who deals more in the processing.

So without further ado, let’s break it down just like we have been, planet by planet. Sign by sign.

The Signs and Planets

Aries and Mars
Aries, Third house
Aries

The communication style that is seen within Aries, is bold. They are very direct communicators, and oftentimes it can come off as pretty brash. Aries is pretty fast with their words, and has a sharp wit. Always pursuing what intrigues them as fast as possible. Never holding back. They can have a childish manner of speaking, and thinking. Connecting A – B, and then solving it immediately.

They’re easily distracted, especially when it comes to the day to day necessities of life. However, although they’re easily distracted- they’re very adept at ensuring tasks are handled immediately. This is the Cardinal energy from Aries poking through. Taking care to make sure that any task that they want to achieve has been crossed off the list.

Aries tends to be fairly competitive, showing a passion for debate in topics that interest them, and being fiercely independent.

Mars

Mars in the third house manifests as a steadfast individuality. They’re sharp and assertive. Mars’ core energy is ambition, and tackling challenges head on. So when you’re looking at Mars in the third house you’re in for a treat. Mars being here belongs to someone whose mentality is a means to an end. Mars has something to accomplish? They study up, and then go and get it taken care of.

They’re incredibly active, constantly moving and working on a new project that has caught their eye. There is a strong pull to the manual work that you can do, strengthened by Mars’ energy. Mars is a planet about action. So when you pair Mars in this house, you find someone who studies and covers the ways they can manually accomplish things.

Just like the Aries, Mars tends to be strong debaters. Priding their independence. Often getting into arguments when they deeply care about a subject.

Mars, third house
Taurus and Venus
Taurus, Third House
Taurus

The Bull has a very grounded way of talking to people. Almost romantic. They don’t seem to speak unless they know that it will have the best intended consequences for themselves, and others. Taurus uses a lot of flowery language when speaking and writing, bringing in a full sensory experience to those who are in the presence of it. Though as in most of Taurus’ positions, they can be incredibly stubborn within their own opinions. Not really taking or listening to what someone else has to say. On the other hand they can get upset when it comes to someone not listening to their opinions.

When it comes to learning they often need to have a very structured environment in order to study, and actually take in the information they’re getting. Often taking on a grounded approach where you value real-world information.

Venus

Venus in the third house manifests as someone who has a strong sense of community. They have a desire to try to make the world surrounding them harmonious and blissfully. Often taking up missions and studies to be able to create that within the world surrounding them. This is a very persuasive placement. Oftentimes being able to sway a person with just the sound of their voice.

There’s typically a deep love in these people who have a love to communicate on a deeper intellectual level, and truly connect with the space and community around them. Really carrying high relationships with everyone they come across.

On the other hand one thing to be aware of with this position is that Venus in the third house can be predisposed to being superficial. As they favor the beauty of people and things over real depth. Just be wary of any superficiality tendencies that may be communicated.

Venus, Third house
Gemini and Mercury
Gemini, Third house
Gemini

The twins being in their ruling house speaks to someone who is really able to engage in speech on a whole different level. Gemini is the type of sign that can fully communicate their needs and wants within a few sentences. Knowing how to engage with anyone they meet on an entirely different level. They can read, write, teach, and have a sense of speech that may seem to be leagues above their age. Gemini carries this type of wisdom that seems like it should be out of reach for them.

The more Gemini is allowed to learn, and experience the world it seems like they just level up in their abilities. This type of communication allows them to have a mentally exhilarating situation with any siblings. Connecting with them on a deeper level, and bringing a different dynamic to the sibling relationship than any other placements. Almost being able to communicate without even opening their mouths.

Mercury

When the planet of communication is back in its home it really finds its stride. Often being able to look at different situations and understand them implicitly the second they land eyes on it. They can have quite the restless mind due to this, but the conclusions they are able to draw and with accuracy as well. Well, needless to say, it’s show stopping. This is an incredibly talkative placement, never really knowing when to stop, but at the end of it all it’s always akin to giving someone a mental boost.

This placement however does have troubles focusing on smaller details. The small details tend to slip out of their hands faster than someone can say “synastry”. Leading them to need to have a strong mental prowess to be able to handle the different challenges that face them.

Cancer and the Moon
Cancer, Third House
Cancer

Looking at Cancer in the third house you find someone who is able to easily speak to their own and others emotional needs. Being able to process them into speech and writing versus through the action of feeling them. It actually works very well within the third house as well, because that emotional aspect is directly connected to the family and siblings motif that the third house carries. Allowing for Cancer to fully understand their family unit and how their personal experiences shaped them.

This placement on the other hand does allow for Cancer to get hurt far more easily. Being so open to words and those paths of communication, then mixing it with emotions? It just leads to someone who can fully understand the emotional implications behind someone’s words, which can strike deep at Cancer’s core and shut them down. They are more likely to dwell on this pain as well due to this placement being more in the mental hemisphere.

The Moon

The Moon being in the third house brings forward someone whose communication style is adaptable. Changing and melding depending on their mood, and who they are surrounded with. Mixing and melding to what is needed and appropriate for the people around them. Often giving a comforting feeling that is hard to miss. The Moon can often weave words into a blanket to offer a sense of comfort and security for those they care about.

Although one of the things that the moon needs to be cautious with in this placement, is that just like Cancer, they’re vulnerable. Opening themselves up to emotional mood swings by allowing themselves to become attached to the people around them. The want to be understood on both ends can lead to hurt in painful situations. Often putting people out.

Leo and the Sun
Leo

Oh Leo, this is a placement that has a flair for the dramatic as usual. Their way of speech favors public speaking and theater. There’s a tone to their voice that really speaks to being able to capture the attention of anyone who’s listening. The energy of the fire in this sign is expressed in the warmth of their voice and the passion that seethes behind it. This of course leads into Leo’s notorious strong belief system, where they just like their fellow fixed signs are incredibly stubborn in their opinions and the way things should be run.

In total Leo is a very independent sign, even in the third house oftentimes forging their own way before bringing people down that path with them. Showing off their leadership by being a trailblazer ahead of the curve. This leads into Leo’s usual downfall to lookout for in their day to day, self-centeredness and egotism.

The Sun

The Sun is the essence of who we are. To have the sun within this placement, there is going to be a strong emphasis on communication. No matter what sign the sun is in, the path that the person will want to take is one with a diplomatic approach. Talking through situations. Being curious about the world, and to learn as much as they possibly can. They find fulfillment in being able to share their inner thoughts with the world. While also reaping the benefits of learning more about the outside world.

Of course, no placement is without its downfalls and this occurs in the Sun as well. The Sun here can get incredibly anxious, and start to overthink. Losing focus on what matters. When a planet lives in the mind, it can oftentimes lose sight of where it wants to go next.

Virgo
Virgo

Putting Virgo into the third house leads to a person being very precise when they are communicating with others. They look at every small detail of writing, and the words that are given to them. Breaking them down, and looking at them in a detailed manner. Then in return they give back a very clear and concise breakdown of what they heard. Ensuring there’s no way they can be misconstrued or taken wrong. They love figuring things out that will help them in the long run. Especially when it’s the tiny things that can easily be overlooked.

One of the things that Virgo needs to be aware of is especially with this placement, they are prone to over thinking. The over analysis of what people say to you, and breaking that down internatally, you may take things too far. It’s important to consider that people may leave information out of what they tell you. Leading you to draw the wrong conclusions.

Virgo’s ruling planet is found under the Gemini tab, if you would like to head over there to take a look.

Libra
Libra, Third House
Libra

The scales are as balanced as always in this placement. They want to make sure that whenever they walk into a conversation that they are giving as much attention as they are receiving. Oftentimes figuring out the perfect balance of socialization. They are incredible mediators in this placement as well. Being able to walk people through issues one at a time, and being able to help bring about a resolution. Libra typically has a fair hand so it’s well said that they are perfect for this position. Especially in their ability to be able to compare all of the point-of-views presented to them.

One thing that Libra needs to be aware of is if they concede too much to one view point or another. They might come off as passive or uninterested in a conversation when Libra is just trying to maintain the peace. So they need to be on their A game when it comes to being fair and being able to maintain the peace.

Their ruling planet Venus was covered in Taurus if you would like to head on down there to take a look.

Scorpio and Pluto
Scorpio

In the third house Scorpio doesn’t get any more talkative. They keep their secrets just as they usually do. However, what they are able to do is they are able to bring about changes, and transformation through communication alone. When they speak with people there’s this underlying fire to it that gets people to listen to everything they have to say. They’ll be fairly curious when speaking with people, asking questions to get to the root of what they want to know. Trying to gain as much information about a person as possible. Giving them the perfect opportunity to help someone else grow and come into themselves.

Scorpio really needs to be on the watch for ensuring they are still vulnerable with the people closest to them. As I said, just because Scorpio is in the third house, doesn’t make them a talker. They can still be quite shut down and out, causing isolation and loneliness.

Pluto

Pluto in the third house speaks to someone who might not be able to communicate at all. The intensity that is found by Pluto brings about such strong changes, and fears. Having these troubles shuts the person’s communication down a lot. Either from not wanting to trigger any negative consequences, or from being tired of things seeming to change so often. Not only that but it does bring about a lot of insecurities that people might not be telling the whole truth.

However, if Pluto is able to turn these insecurities into strengths. If they are able to look at the challenges, and transformations head on. They will find that they are able to be very effective communicators, allowing other people and themselves to find a deep growth they might not have recognized in themselves.

Sagittarius and Jupiter
Sagittarius

The mind of Sagittarius only seems to expand within the third house. Their innate desire to grow and broaden their mind finding a home within this placement. Often allowing them to hone their skills in being able to absorb information and to comprehend the philosophical ways to live. They have a very lively way of talking with people, especially when they are coming from different life paths. Allowing them to have this special kind of charisma that brings about meaningful conversations.

Sagittarius does need to be aware of their usual hold backs. Those large ideas get spread a little thin. Especially since Sagittarius likes to focus on the big picture. When Sag is told to look at the details, they may be unable to. In this placement as well they may be known for excessive talking. Not knowing when to zip their lips and listen to what’s going on around them.

Jupiter

Jupiter, similar to Sagittarius, takes a focus in being able to spread and stretch their wings. Looking out for new trains of thoughts to take, by expanding social circles and meeting new people. They look to expand on their core values, and how they can truly learn more. Jupiter is much more open to looking for information from many different perspectives. Allowing the knowledge to come into them without a second thought, like a breath of fresh air.

This does lead to Jupiter’s downfall. They often take so much time trying to listen from so many different sources, that they don’t actually absorb any of it. Oftentimes forgetting what they’ve learned, or forgetting where they learned it from. Leaving them high and dry when they need to reach out to that source once more. Putting them into a detriment away from the goals they want to achieve.

Capricorn and Saturn
Capricorn

Looking to Capricorn in the third house, you find someone who has a very grounded approach when it comes to talking with others. They aren’t the type to really enjoy frivolous conversations, and often keep things to the point. Ensuring that they are gaining as much information that they need from the conversation. They don’t like to play host to distractions, and nonsense- especially when there is something important to discuss. Though with Capricorn here, this may mean a stellar opportunity for working as a teacher, being able to drive through communication practices.

Capricorn does need to be on the watch though. Similar to Scorpio, just because they are found in the third house doesn’t make them open to other people. So Capricorn needs to be sure that they are communicating the emotions they have with other people. This helps bring a vulnerability and softness that Capricorn often misses.

Saturn

Saturn is going to appear as overly cautious in their conversations and the way they communicate with the people around them. Oftentimes never saying much more than they need to. This may be due to anxieties that surround the person with this placement. Saturn often restricts the ways in which we want to live and interact with people. Imposing itself to hold us back in one way or another. So when you look at it in the third house you get someone who is very precise in their words. Ensuring that nothing they say can be taken wrong.

On the other hand Saturn can be very logical, and even headed within this placement. Knowing when to speak, and when to hold back. Their minds often take a very analytical approach to fully understand the situation and the nuances around it. Allowing them to have a few strong relationships.

Aquarius and Uranus
Aquarius

Putting Aquarius in the third house speaks to a person who has a special way of looking at and understanding the world. They have a very innovative approach to the world. Looking at it through different perspectives, then communicating how different changes can be implemented. Especially with the third house’s need for change, it works in harmony with Aquarius’ desire to rip structure from the ground up.  Their manner of speech is typically just a bit out there. Kind of fantastical. Which pulls people in. As I’ve said before Aquarius isd a very social sign, and to have it in the third house just increases that ability to pull people in.

Aquarius though does fall into the tendency of being too out there for people to understand. Oftentimes failing to fully communicate how something needs to change, or what they need. Holding them back from getting the change they want to see in the world.

Uranus

When it comes to Uranus in the third house they are almost identical to Aquarius. Being innovative, and creative with a mastermind way of solving problems. Their minds taking up different ways to show how they think and how they are perceiving the world. They may not be the most communicative, but when they are it’s going to be some wild stuff. Also making them incredibly influential, if not well understood. Uranus, just like Aquarius is still on the outskirts often being seen as eccentric and out there in their beliefs.

This often leads to being misunderstood when they try to communicate what they want. Or leads to ridicule and being looked at differently. They also come off as… unstable. Having wildly different behaviors from one moment to the next, making people think they may be untrustworthy.

Pisces and Neptune
Pisces

As the Fish enter into the third house you get an interesting combination. They get the compassionate nature that is often seen within Cancer. Able to communicate through emotions and wide mental stances. Their sense of communication follows a dreamy far out kind of state. Able to kind of walk people through their emotions in almost a dream-like way. Coming across as very philosophical and exploring areas not often reached. They can comprehend and help others understand the complexities behind why they feel the way they do about certain philosophies.

Though Pisces, as we see with Pisces often, there’s sort of a lack of being able to stay the course sometimes. Going off to dream land and losing the train of thought. Losing the ability to communicate clearly with the person they’re talking to. This can also be a defense mechanism to avoid conversations they may want to avoid.

Neptune

When you look at the planet of dreams, and higher mental function you get something interesting with the third house. Neptune is a very adaptable sign able to go through the ebbs and flows of life. With that their communication style is able to change and adapt with who they speak with. Their mental instinct often goes towards self-expression and having people chase their dreams and what they want out of life.

Though Neptune really feels the negative effects of Pisces in full force. Often over-idealizing people’s hopes and dreams, coming up through their own mentality in that it’s something easily achieved. When it might not be. Allowing their emotions to get thoroughly connected to the dreams and ideals that they and others have- leaves them vulnerable. Especially when it comes to understanding emotions, and those deeper philosophical questions that Neptune enjoys asking as well.

There we have it for a Walk Through the Signs – Third House. The third house is certainly an interesting stage for these energies to play on.
